Magnum PI reboot gets action-packed first look trailer – but ditches the classic red Ferrari in the very first episode

The reboot of detective drama Magnum PI looks a thoroughly modern affair with high level action all over the place.

But one key item is missing and is literally SCRAPPED in the first episode – the classic red Ferrari.

The show, rebooted by CBS, will see Jay Hernandez take over the starring role of Thomas Magnum, originated by the moustachioed stud Tom Selleck.

It will follow, as in the original series, the ex-Navy seal as he serves as a private investigator in Hawaii, along with his crew: helicopter pilot TC, Rick Wright, and a female version of Jonathan Quayle Higgins III named Juliet, formerly of MI6.

Rick and TC in the chopper

But his car is an unfortunate casualty of the new show after Magnum dives from it to escape an oncoming truck, and luckily grabs onto the feet of TC’s helicopter.

The car, however, suffers a pretty nasty fate as it is hit clean off a cliff and can be seen completely written off as Magnum walks off on the phone.

As Magnum opens the sneak preview, he says: “My name is Thomas Sullivan Magnum.

Higgins looks pretty different in the reboot

“When I’m not inspiring novels by bestselling author Robin Masters, I’m his live-in security consultant in Hawaii and a private investigator with these knuckle heads, my best friends.”

Before he introduces the crew they read an excerpt from one of these books, and tease Magnum for supposedly inspiring a falsehood about jumping from a spaceship.

Magnum continues: “That’s Theodore Calvin or TV – ex-Marine Corps chopper pilot.

Jay Hernandez and Magnum PI

“Nuzo – ex-Seal. Always the over-achiever.

“Rick – he’s connected. If you want something, Rick is the man to see.

“And lastly, Juliet Higgins – property manager, former British intelligence, MI6, and kind of a pain in my…”

Clearly there is some sexual tension between Magnum and Juliet, as she jokes how she doesn’t want him around after setting some vicious dogs on him.

But things take a turn when Magnum is called to a job and finds Nuzo has been kidnapped and killed, at which point he declares that “this is personal.”

He enlists the help of Juliet, though he evidently doesn’t expect her to be quite as formidable as she proves herself to be, and the piloting skills of TC to help him chase down the culprits.

This is when the real explosions happens and everything becomes higher stakes – with Magnum diving into a sea of sharks, a truck getting mowed down and quickly lighting on fire, and Magnum getting beaten pretty badly by some scary-looking men.

He looks pretty banged up during the episode

This last point is something Rick picks up on, telling him he has been getting his “ass kicked a lot this week.”

After some more chopper blades whooshing and gunshots emanating around Hawaii, Magnum is heard saying: “Rick, TC, Higgins, friends like those come around once in a lifetime.”

Then the iconic car careers off the cliff (despite Higgins ordering him to “bring the car back in one piece” as Magnum dives upwards and grabs onto TC’s helicopter, in a rather epic scene showing the scale of the new show.

But he smoldered in his army get-up

As the sneak peek finishes, Magnum is seen jumping into the car with Juliet, but this time a sporty black car rather than the red car of old.

The pilot was directed by Justin Lin, who was behind Fast Five and Fast and Furious Six, and is slated to premiere this autumn on Mondays in America.
