The German midfielder’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season, and Can is not short of suitors looking to land him on a free transfer in the summer.
But it seems Liverpool are no closer to tying the 24-year-old down for an extended period, because the two parties cannot agree on a compromise.
Liverpool are unwilling to give in to Can’s demand in fear it will set a dangerous precedent at the club, and could see other Liverpool players asking for the same thing when their contracts come up for renewal.
As things stand it is to the discretion of a Premier League club to include a release clause in a contract, as opposed to in Spain where it is compulsory.
Can is currently out of action for the Reds after suffering a back injury.
